The way I approach counselling

One thing that drew me to marriage and family therapy is that people's struggles rarely exist on their own. Our relationships, family histories, communities, and cultures affect how we see ourselves and respond to difficult situations.

That perspective is part of my work with everyone, including people who come to therapy on their own. We can look at the immediate problem without losing sight of what else might be contributing to it.

I've worked in primary care and community clinical settings with people dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties, and major changes in their lives. Those experiences have taught me not to assume that the same approach will work for everyone.

In our sessions, I'll listen carefully, ask questions, and share observations when I think they might be useful. Sometimes we'll focus on understanding what's happening. Other times we may work with practical strategies or a difficult conversation you're preparing to have.

My goal is for the work to be relevant to your life, not just to what happens during our appointments.

In practice

How we may work

My approach is systemic and trauma-informed. Depending on what brings you in, I may draw on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), narrative approaches, and other methods from my clinical training and experience. We can discuss what seems appropriate for you.
